Prescription Drugs

The abuse of prescription drugs is increasing everyday and is cause for great concern around the world. Narcotics are the most commonly abused drugs on the market today and law enforcement is doing everything they can to put a stop to the abuse of over the counter drugs. The three main categories of prescription drugs are narcotics, depressants, and stimulants.

NARCOTICS: These drugs, such as OxyContin, Vicodin, and Percocet, are known as analgesics or opiods that are commonly prescribed for moderate to severe physical pain. These drugs are commonly abused because they provide euphoric, sedating, and numbing affects to their users. The abuse of these drugs causes dependence and tolerance; with very bad withdrawal effects should users attempt to stop abusing them.

DEPRESSANTS: Depressants such as Xanax, Valium, and Librium are commonly prescribed in the medical field to help treat anxiety and sleep disorders. They are often abused because they provide sedating effects to users. Chronic use of these drugs often cause dependence and tolerance, with strong withdrawal affects should the abuser attempt to stop using them.

STIMULANTS: Drugs that are stimulants, such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Meridia, are prescribed to help treat disorders such as ADD, ADHD, and asthma. These drugs are commonly abused because they have energizing effects as well as provide euphoric feelings to their users. These drugs do not generally cause tolerance or dependence but abuse is strongly link to hostility, violence, and paranoia. There is also a very strong risk of heart failure and seizures.
