Methadone

German scientists first synthesized methadone during World War 2 due to a shortage of morphine. Methadone produces many of the same affects of morphine and heroin, although it is not chemically similar to those drugs. Methadone was first brought to the United Sates in 1947 an analgesic and is used today mainly for the treatment of narcotic addiction. This drug is available in oral solutions, tabs, and is even injectable. The effects of methadone can last up to 24 hours, and high doses can block the effects of heroin. If used repeatedly, users become dependent and develop tolerance of the drug. The withdrawal symptoms of methadone come on more slowly and are less intense than those of heroin. Overdoses of methadone have caused many deaths.
